A Valentine Day Note To My Love

“We should celebrate love everyday not only on Valentine’s day”, V-day haters would say to defend their distaste for Valentine’s day. That argument could be deemed true but such thought pattern turns them into hypocrites especially if they celebrate Father’s/Mother’s day as if only a day should be set aside to celebrate those angels in human form (our parents).

Your impression of Valentine’s day doesn’t change the fact that it’s the most acknowledged/celebrated day after Christmas. It’s a day where all forms of love (fake and real) are displayed in the open with people dressing like mini Father Christmases with their red and white outfits  and gifts (asides the white beards and protruding stomach).

It all seems like the older I get the more I appreciate Valentine’s day. Going out on V-day with my lover and seeing both the young and the old all out en masse to bask in the Valentine’s day euphoria made the occasion even more special.

This piece is not to comment on the atrocious dressing my innocent eyes stumbled upon yesterday or the overzealous display of PDA (Public Display of Affection) by lovebirds. It’s an innocent piece to acknowledge the love of my life on such a special day.

A LOVE LETTER TO THE LOVE OF MY LIFE:

No day passes by without a constant appreciation to God for letting our paths cross. You have been a best friend thorough the good and bad times. I was told by tradition that it was wrong for a man to cry but you have thought me being emotional doesn’t make one weak.
You have helped me in my toughest times and laughed with me in my happiest times.

I remember the days while growing up where I was always among the top students in class, you enjoyed those proud days with me.

Then the days where my results dipped while in the University with a particular result bad good enough to make a 3rd class student proud, you were there to console me.

To the days when I slept on the floor of an okada man’s one room with 3 other people in a bid to serve my country, you kept me going with your comforting words.

Then the days when I slept in the office (on the floor, on my desk, on the wooden chair, on the metallic chair) all because I was posted outside Lagos (where my family lives) and I couldn’t afford house rent (didn’t want to ask my well-to-do parents).

In all this trials and triumphs, you have stuck by me through thick and thin. I might have had a privileged upbringing with my parents being able to afford my school fees but you have taught me to strive to become better than them, to make my own mark in life, not to depend on their money and to work hard and smart.

Even the days I started this blog when I spent over 4 hours on a daily basis writing content for this blog without any financial rewards (zero kobo). You pushed me and made me see beyond money and look towards the impact my articles would have on people.

The days when people would say I had anger issues, you would look at me and say “you might get angry unnecessarily a times but you are perfect and I love you the way you are”.

I could go on and on and still not find the words that would come to appreciating you enough for what you have done for me. Asides God and my family, you are the next on my hierarchy of love. Simply put, I would take a bullet for you. I tell you how much I love you everyday but yesterday was an opportunity to show you love the Valentine way.

As I sat yesterday alone in that fast-food restaurant munching my 1 liter large box of ice cream with popcorn, cupcake and sausage roll while watching love birds walk in and out. People might have taken pity on this poor boy eating alone by the side with a smile on his face.

“Life is too short to waste any amount of time on wondering what other people think about you. In the first place, if they had better things going on in their lives, they wouldn’t have the time to sit around and talk about you. What’s important to me is not others’ opinions of me, but what’s important to me is my opinion of myself.”
