The Bible Verse That Made Me Stop Clubbing

club

I stepped foot into a night club for the first time in  September 2011 while undertaking my NYSC program and that itself was more out of curiosity than fun seeking. Always heard about clubs and desired to know what made people throng to clubs in search of fun/excitement.

My first day wasn’t as fun as I had anticipated. Drinks were too damn expensive, drinks that would sell for less than a quarter of the same price (outdoor vendors). The music was too damn loud, I could barely hear myself think. The place was filled with sweaty people gyrating in different directions. Scantily and seductively dressed ladies were making their presence felt.

I arrived with my gang with the confidence of using our good looks and poise to get girls to groove with. What a wawu!!!!!

In the despair of dancing alone, one of my guys saw a group of friends he knew and we ended up dancing with them. Up stepped Angela, dark skinned chikabonita with the behind of a goddess. She displaced my senses and then when I was high like a kite. She was gone.

To cut the sad story short, we ended up leaving the club for home but Angela had left an indelible mark on my sense. I was high on alcohol and also ‘high’ on Angela’s gyrations down there. Suffice to say that the sleep wasn’t a pleasant one.

I got up the next day to say my prayers and a scripture kept popping up in my head.

Mark 8:36.

I opened my Bible and it read “What shall it profit a man to gain the World and lose his soul”.

At first I didn’t understand the scripture’s reference to my situation and then it hit home.

What shall it profit a man to smell jollof rice and not eat it.

What shall it profit a man to enter a plane and not fly in it.

What shall it profit a man to spend on a girl and watch her marry someone else.

What shall it profit a man to dance with a girl at a club and not end up going home with her.

What shall it profit a man to get turned on and not get laid.

Then I made up my mind. If I’m not with my girlfriend, I’m never going clubbing.

It’s been a little under 6 years since my first club experience and in almost 2190 days (365 days x 6 years), I have been clubbing just 7 times.

Why smell what you won’t eat?

Why the torture?
